Description

The excavation of stanchion holes took place during substantial alterations to 'Jacklin's' shop on the site of a Roman pottery shop known from the construction of 'Jacklin's' in 1927. Building work was designed not to disturb the buried archaeology and the excavated holes were not deep enough to reach the pottery shop but produced burnt pottery which derived from it. <1> Although destruction levels relating to the original Roman shop were not encountered, strata observed in two bore-holes indicated that in situ Boudican destruction deposits occur at between 1.0-1.5m and 2.0m below the present surface. <2><3><4>
