Full Description
A Roman pottery shop destroyed during the Boudican revolt. A mass of broken pottery, glass and charcoal from the shop was first revealed during the excavation of foundations for a new shop, 'Jacklin's Cafe', in 1927 (ECC673).<1>
Further pottery was discovered during excavations on the adjacent site of a new garage in 1929 (ECC652).<2><3>
Several stanchion holes excavated on the site of 'Jacklin's' shop in 1997 failed to reveal destruction levels relating to the original Roman shop but strata observed in two bore-holes indicated that in situ Boudican destruction deposits occur at between 1.0-1.5 and 2.0m below the present surface.<4><5>
