Description

Two pits were excavated on the site of a Roman pottery shop within Insula 19. Excavations were carried out by members of staff of the Royal Grammar School under the direction of M. R. Hull, curator of the Castle Museum. The excavations resulted from the erection of a new garage. Two holes were dug about 15 feet apart and revealed three feet of modern make-up covering two and a half foot deep mass of burnt daub was covered by three feet of 'recent rubbish'. Below the burnt daub was a thin layer of burnt earth overlying natural sand. A great bulk of finds was made the majority of which was red glazed sigillata ware. Fine glass was also plentiful. The homogeneity of the pottery and the number of vessels present are enough to suggest that this was the site of a pottery store. <1> <2><3>
