A Saxon church was examined in the former grounds of the Abbey.

A trial-trenched evaluation and small excavation in 2015, in advance of a housing development, defined a small number of late prehistoric (ditches, pits and post-holes), which produced a small assemblage of handmade pottery (incl. three decorated sherds) dated to the Early Iron Age. The excavation also defined a probable Roman ditch (containing a 2nd century AD sherd).

P.G. Laver's excavations in 1931-33 revealed 'many burials' within the area of the Castle chapel (MCC2084), but there was 'nothing to indicate that any burials were associated with the chapel' (Drury 1983, p.333). The burials had been interred after the demolition of the chapel, barbican and forebuilding and are thought to date from the late 16th to the 17th centuries when the Keep was used a prison.<1>

A Wesleyan Methodist chapel was built behind, and to the south of, the street frontage of Culver Street in 1835. In 1970 the Culver Street church was closed and sold for redevelopment as part of the Lion Walk shopping precinct.

The location of this workhouse is recorded on the 1st Edition 1:2500 map (1874-1887), as the 'Old Workhouse', today as 'Keeper's Cottage'.
