Full Description

RCHME survey of 18 North Hill. House that 'is perhaps of the 16th century but has been much altered; there is a 17th century kitchen wing at the back' <1>

No 17, No's 18, 18a and 18B (formerly listed as No 18 (Durlston House)) North Hill. Grade II. Good late C16 structure with late Georgian front of grey gault brick with coping. Two storeys, attics and cellars, timber framed and plastered, the roofs tiled. The 9 windows range of double hung sashes with glazing bars, in plain reveals. Two doorways, each approached by a flight of steps. No 18 has a C18-C19 oriel window over the central door case. In the interior the north room has exposed stud work and the earlier front with projecting upper storey can be seen in the front wall; there are painted inscriptions round the tops of the walls of the room. <1>

The Museum Resource Centre holds photographs showing internal timbering of No 18 North Hill, shows lathes, brick chimney and wall paintings. <3>

In December 1925 painted wall inscriptions were found at 18 North Hill dating to c. AD 1500. These were photographed and the following record made 'These inscriptions are in black lettering on a white ground-work, four of them occupying the beam at the top of the north wall of the principal ground-floor house. Later ceilings had discovered the beam and it will be seen that the end portions have been injured and are almost indecipherable. Similar moral precepts probably occupied the beams at the top of the other three walls, but these have been obliterated. The cross-beams were possibly decorated with inscriptions, but the only words visible are "IN DOMINO CONFIDO" on one of these large cross-beams running south and north.' <4>
