Full Description
Morant's 1748 map shows a lodge between the Meer (Wormingford Mere) and Church Hall. The lodge is marked on Chapman & Andre's 1777 map, with at least two buildings in an enclosure.<1> Two separate enclosures, one enclosing three buildings and the other one L-shaped building, are shown on the First Edition OS 1 inch (c.1800). Nothing is shown on the 1833 tithe map. The first OS map of 1864 shows a field called Lodge Pastures as well as Great and Little Deer pastures.<2>
It has been suggested that lodge could been used by Elizabeth I , who visited Smallbridge Hall (just to the north of the River Stour) on two occasions, where she was entertained to a hunting spectacular.<2>
The exact location of the lodge is unclear. Colchester Archaeology Group hand-excavated five test pits between January and May 2007. Brick wall foundations were defined, as well as substantial quantities of brick and post medieval rubble, tile, clay pipe and metal objects.<2>
There is no plan of the trenches and no accurate location of these investigations in the report. A geophysical survey was also undertaken by CAG, although the results were not clearly related to the test pits, or other landscape features.<3>
