Summary

Red hill (saltern) RH 117, to the east of The Shell Bungalow and straddling the sea wall and extending into the salt marsh (Bonner's Saltings). The red hill covered an oval area 56m x 35m, with briquetage, hearths, evaporation tanks, and a small quantity of belgic pottery, excavated by Kay de Brisay and members of Colchester Archaeological Group, 1973/6.

Full Description

Red hill, covering an oval area 56m x 35m, with briquetage, hearths, evaporation tanks, and a quantity of belgic pottery, excavated by K de Brisay.<1> Red hill in field no 378 reported by Mrs Evans. Large quantity of red earth found, plus briquetage which included firebars, pedestals and evaporation tanks. There was very little pottery, but it included part of a large belgic pedestal vessel.<2> Other refs: <1><3>-<9>
Fired clay from the upper level of a hearth produced an archaeomanetic date of 10 BC - AD 40. Charcoal from a lower hearth level produced a date of 1930+/-70 BP (calibrated 34 BC to AD 134).<10>
Human bones from more than one individual were recovered, 'at the bottom of what was apparently a ditch in the mound which had then been filled with red earth'.<11>
