Full Description

Wire's diary from November 1845 to March 1847 records the uncovering of a tessellated pavement and mosaic at 17-18 North Hill. Wire was informed that the mosaic was found twenty years before then covered up again.<1><2> During Wire's time it was uncovered then re-covered, to lie undisturbed until 1906 when part of it was again uncovered and removed to the Museum. A picture was published in Hull's Roman Colchester.<3><4> The black and white mosaic was partially uncovered again during a watching brief in 1977 (In the TEAS it is shown as colour, presumably an embellishment?).<5>
