Full Description

Trench was dug by hand in 1989 across the line of a Roman road to determine its condition in advance of the construction of a proposed new road. The latest metalled surface and side ditches were located. A section was drawn and photographed. The pottery included a near complete folded colour coated beaker with scaled decoration in the western side ditch. Three smaller exploratory trenches (1.5m x 1m) were also dug between the Roman road and Maldon Road, c.100m apart, on the line of the proposed new road but these showed no archaeological features.<2>

The same area was subjected to geophysical survey in 2015, which defined the roadside ditches aligned NE to SW (ECC3580).<3>
