Full Description

This rather dilapidated bastion was excavated by P.G. Laver in 1923. The wall of the bastion was found to butt on to the adjacent Roman town wall. The bastion was of similar construction to Bastion 5 (see 12316), i.e., masonry of smallish blocks of septaria so mortared over that the coursing is not clearly visible. The bottom of the masonry lay 1ft below the bottom of the Roman foundation. The building seems to have run up, without any coursing, to a height of 9ft 4.5" above the tile course capping the Roman foundation, where Laver refers to an offset but this may be the upper limit of the original work, on which stands a modern parapet wall. Few finds were made presumably from the filling of the bastion, these few pieces of glass and pottery are all Roman. As at bastions the filling seems to be soil taken from the surface nearby containing plenty of Roman remains but nothing later. As the Roman walls were still standing, the bastion was closed rather than open as at Bastion 5. Bastion 1 was projected 11ft. 3" measured internally, and 5ft. thick. Hull gives a section and photographs.<1> - <6>

Site Assessment = Neglected but little modern work.<5><6>

A magnetomer and topographic survey was carried out in the grounds of East Hill House. A negative linear anomoly aligned N-S is possibly a street, revetment or terrace.<7>
