Full Description

Excavation on Bastion 4 in 1934 found that the foundations rested on a layer of rammed gravel, thought to represent a Roman street. Being opposite the NE postern gate, a search was made for evidence of a gate here. A gap in the tile courses of the Roman wall may indicate the former presence of a gate here. <1> <2> <3>
