Full Description

Site of the Schere Gate (possibly Roman and Medieval). Often mentioned in Medieval records but probably not Roman. Believed to have been made as a short cut between St Johns Abbey and the town. RCHM considered that the present timber gateway replaced a former postern. Present gateway is modern. <1> <2> In 1926 a trench for a cable was cut through the steps (the gate is stepped as it is steep). The masonry of the town wall was at least 14ft thick. This should be a gate tower or an internal tower. If the latter, the gate must be east of the steps for the wall continues under the buildings westwards. <3> <4>
