In bad state of repair, partly fell 1651, and demolished 1675. Plan never recovered. <1> This was apparently the original Roman gate. <2> The site of the gate is under the modern street. Morant gives the impression that the gate had vanished completely before 1741 but this is not so. Duncan (source 4) noted that the piers of the arches indicated a central carriageway and a footway on each side. A drawing by Constable, now in the V and A, shows the south side of the East Gate in 1813. This shows the south town wall with a westward extension, possibly the south wall of the south guardroom of the gate. If so, the gate is a large one. PG Laver noted foundations on the S side of the gate, under the pavement, which he took for part of the gate. This piece of wall was found again in 1925. A few feet S of East Hill just S of Constable's wing-wall the Roman wall is pierced by an opening with a double sized arch of tiles. It is 11ft above present ground level (to inner crown of vault). The lower part has not been examined opening is 2ft wide. It is the outfall of a drain. <3> - <6>
