Full Description

Site of the North Gate. NE corner of the Roman gate was found in 1944 just N of the corner of Northgate Street. The reveal of the portal was visible and the E wall of the entrance passage continued for 7.5 ft beyond it. The wall was preserved to pavement level, built of tile and septaria. <1> The NE corner was found in 1944, during work for a fuse box in the pavement on the E side of North Hill. The town wall, approached from the E was curved into the entrance. <2> <3> Exact size of the gate and the street at this point are uncertain. Hull sugggests a single portal gate 10 or 11ft wide with overall length for the gate of 10ft 6". No pottery or other remains were found. Photo and plan in this source. <4> Other refs. <5> <6>
