Full Description

Two Roman sphinxes found in 1820-1. One, a bronze statuette was found in 1820, the second,a stone sculpture, was found in 1821 in the garden of the hospital, within a few yards of the former. <1> The bronze statuette stands 1.5". <2> Other refs. <3> <4> Site within west cemetery. Hull's site 35 block of graves to the W of hospital (?cremations) and "at 35, besides the urns, was found the Colchester Sphinx (Hull site1) and another small bronze sphinx. Not far away lay part of a military tombstone. <3>
