Full Description

Early record of 'Cat Lane' in 1319-20, now Lion Walk <1><2>

A section was cut across Lion Walk during the excavations of 1971-4. The earliest metalling sealed post-Roman topsoil and at least one stake hole. The earliest metalling contained fragments of tile all of which were Roman. The absence of peg-tile is consistent with a date before the 13th century. Stratigraphically the earliest metalling fits well along the frontage of building 28 <MON492> and the likely level from which the foundation of this was cut.<3>
