Full Description

Moat at Wood Hall, surrounds the house (late C16, see 9170). <1> <2> In 1960 OS reported moat as in good condition, waterfilled. <3> OS photo card in SMR. <4> Complete rectangular moat. <5> Sketch-plan in SMR shows one corner of the moat enlarged to form a pond bay. <6> Mentioned 1452 as `Woodhall'. <7> In fact the house is probably C15 and later, H-plan. According to DOE area book, in 1332 William de Horkesleigh and Emma his wife held Woodhall. <8> Barn north of th ehouse is C15 or earlier, of 5 bays, very heavy oak framing, main posts without jowls. <8> According to SMR, Wood Hall is mentioned by Wright in his History of Esses. <9>
