Full Description
Section across Roman (Colchester to Maldon) road at Rayner's Farm excavated by Hull in 1936.<1><2><3>
Hull states, 'The width of the road indicated is rather over 30 ft. [c.9.15m] in our diagram, but the uncertainty in which we are left by the features which resemble five ditches, and the difficulty in deciding which gravel is undisturbed and which may have been road-metal, makes definite conclusions impossible. One thing is certain, the 'tramline' exists in the ground and it is Roman. It was certainly a road.<2>
