Full Description

A Fieldwalking survey over 6.9ha of farmland to the East of Birch airfield recovered large quantities of Roman pottery, tile and building stone. Distribution plots suggest that the sites of at least two buildings lie in the survey area. The date ranges of the keyed tile and pottery indicate occupation from the 2nd to 4th century. <1>.
Overall the Roman distribution plots show an emphasis toward the South Eastern part of field one: Two distinct clusters referred to as 'a' and 'b' are centred on NGR. TL92351932 and NGR. TL92401930 respectively. <1>. To the South side of these are more dipsersed scatter (Referred to as D) is centred on NGR. TL92251925. Collectively these 3 groups may represent several buildings or a single large villa. A great concentration of stone at NGR. TL92381960 (referred to as cluster c) appears to point to the location of a seperate stone structure 150m to the North of Clusters A and B. <1>.

Fieldwalking results indicate that there may be at least two Roman building within the fieldwalked area. <1>.

Area = 6.9ha
