Full Description

During excavations at Sheepen in 1970 (ECC488) an early Roman industrial site was discovered. Parts of what appeared to be two compounds were found within the Claudian occupation of site i, the eastern one (MCC1372) containing traces of metalworking.

Similarly to MCC1372, this compound was defined by a series of post pits, seven of which survived, although this compound was located in the western part of site i. Most of the post pits contained Claudian and earlier material with animal bone but the copper alloy scrap that was present in MCC1372 was not present here. The interior of the compound was heavily disturbed by post medieval gravel quarrying so defining the purpose of the area.<1>
