Full Description
In 1964, under the direction of B.R.K. Niblett (nee Dunnett) for the Colchester Excavation Committee, two trenches were cut across the line of the Norman rampart which crossed the east end of the site. Beneath 0.6m of modern rubble and garden soil a series of tips of sand, gravel and Roman tile and mortar was encountered. The maximum thickness of the deposit was 0.6m which was felt to represent the remnant of the rampart. 'Several loose human bones and a human skull' were found scattered in layer 17. Layer 17 was sealed below the Norman rampart.<1>
An in situ inhumation burial was found nearby, recorded as MCC2091, sealed by layer 17. The disturbed human remains might, therefore, have been contemporary with this burial. Niblett also refers to the (undated) inhumation burials found by Laver in 1892, also undated but assigned by Laver to the Anglo-Saxon period (see MCC9293); they could be related but the burial/s discovered in 1964 were c.70m to the south of Laver's burials.
