Full Description

In 1964, under the direction of B.R.K. Niblett (nee Dunnett) for the Colchester Excavation Committee, two trenches were cut across the line of the Norman rampart, which crossed the east end of the site. An unfurnished inhumation burial 9, aligned N to S (i.e. head to north), was defined on the inner edge of the Castle bailey ditch and securely sealed below the rampart, and cut in to the latest Roman level. Consequently, the burial is quite possibly Anglo-Saxon in date.<1>

'Several loose human bones and a human skull' were found scattered in layer 17 (which sealed burial 9, and was itself sealed below the rampart) and it may well be that these are the remains of one or more burials, which were disturbed when the defences were constructed. See MCC2092. More bones were found in the rampart.

Niblett suggests the burial is reminiscent to the five inhumation burials found by Laver in 1892, also undated but assigned by Laver to the Anglo-Saxon period (see MCC9293); they could be related but the burial/s discovered in 1964 were c.70m to the south of Laver's burials.

It seems unlikely, however, that these burials (because they were stratigraphically earlier than the Castle rampart) have anything to do with the 16th and 17th century prison inhumation burials (MCC9291) which lie less than 50m away in Castle Yard.
