Full Description
A Roman building (House V) discovered during excavations on the Lewis's Gardens Site in 1958 (ECC669). The remains of this building included an opus signinum raft, based on septaria over which the main north and east walls had been built. The raft may have provided additional stability on an unstable area of the sandy subsoil? Within the north-east angle of the house, this raft was sealed by another similar floor bounded on the south by a narrow foundation trench which was probably the support for a wooden foundation wall. South of the main north wall was the lower floor of a hypocaust at 2.13m below the 1958 ground surface. Twenty eight pilae survived from the 42 which would have originally stood on the site. Two fragments of mosaic were recovered from the hypocaust. The robbed-out wall trench on its north side ran to the west, and that on its southern edge lay outside the excavation trench.
A wall (ELM743) ran off in an easterly direction from the north-east corner of the building. This may have been contemporary or a later addition.<1>
