Full Description
A small Roman building situated close to a group of pottery kilns (MCC1430, MCC1431 and MCC1432). The building was not symmetrical measuring just under 9ft. by 13 ft. The walls were constructed of a mortar and rubble core built between two faces of coursed dressed Kentish ragstone. Tiles in the south west corner formed the base of a door-sill. The floor was of beaten clay on a mass of broken stone and mortar. The building appeared to have been deliberately demolished and much of the building material was removed. Within the overburden of the demolition debris there were fragments of red and white painted plaster. A pit had been dug into the rubble and a pottery vessel inserted into it was dated to the fourth century. The foundations of the north wall had been robbed out during the Roman period. A later wall? foundation had also been inserted into the rubble of the doorway (see MCC1446) and a wall of stiff clay ran across the back of the kilns (see MCC1452).<1>
