Full Description

During excavations at Sheepen in 1970 (ECC488), numerous Roman features were recorded in addition to the main structures and buildings of the early Roman industrial site. Most of these features provided evidence for the industrial activities which were being undertaken across the site during the early Roman period. Features included a rubbish dump made up of tips of charcoal, ash, humus and domestic refuse such as animal bone spread in patches over an area approximately 8m across (site iii). Immediately to the east of the dump was a rough pebble surface, possibly representing a path or lane (see MCC1393) and to the east of this were three shallow pit features filled with the refuse from the metal working activity on this industrial site. The waste material sealed the pits and spread over an area 9m x 4m. These features were later filled in and levelled for a surface associated with a new building (see MCC1395). Close to the metal working compound (MCC1372) were two timber-lined latrine pits and a second compound which had been largely quarried away.<1>
