Full Description

During excavations at Sheepen in 1970 a secondary road surfacing was found sealing the pre-Boudican Roman road (MCC610) on Sheepen Hill. The surfacing was badly weathered and in many places had been largely eroded away. The earlier surface of the road was covered in a layer of orange sandy clay on which the final road metalling had been laid. A discontinuous quarry ditch and a gully were probably contemporary with the final surface. No datable material was found in the make-up for this road surface, but it clearly post-dated the Boudican destruction, the quarry ditch for example cut through the burnt daub from a building (MCC1395) destroyed during the revolt.<1>
