Full Description

During excavations at St Helena School in 1976 (ECC352), a Roman building (CAT Building 159) was partially examined. The buildings northern foundation was discovered forming the north side of two rooms. It consisted of a trench filled with lumps of septaria and a fragments of tile and brick. The equivalent foundation on the south side of the building was of packed gravel. The north end of the partition wall between the two northern rooms was also exposed. This was a secondary addition and consisted of a trench containing large lumps of septaria. The foundation sealed two earlier post-pits. The only layer which was contemporary with the building was a patch of packed gravel which appeared to be the remains of a floor or make-up for a floor. 'From its plan it is clear that the building was a house of some kind'. Nine rooms are visible from the parch marks but there may have been more, e.g. a north wing matching that on the south. It seems likely that the building was linked in some way to the adjacent Temple.<1>
