Description

Excavation on a possible Roman glass working site first noted during the excavations at Sheepen in 1933. A pit about 3 x 3m was excavated under the supervision of Miss. Dunnett but without finding any trace of the manufacture of glass. Ms Dorothy Charlesworth then opened up an area to the west of this at a distance of about three metres from the presumed position of the 1933 glass find. This second investigation over 10 days revealed a burnt floor with traces of glass on its NW side. The floor had been built over a filled in pit. The excavations were funded by the Corning Museum of Glass (USA) and were instigated by D.B. Harden of the London Museum. <1>
