Description

Trail excavations were conducted on an area of land north of Winsley’s House and East Lodge, to be redeveloped as the Central Health Clinic. A 5 ft. wide and 189 ft. long east-west trench along the south face of the building was excavated, except for a gap of 22 ft. and 6 ins. on either side of a cedar tree to avoid damage to its root system. The trench was dug by machine down to the natural subsoil of sand and gravel. In addition to Roman and Medieval pottery, possible traces of a north-south Roman street were found 80 ft along the trench. At this point the Roman layers lay immediately on the subsoil at a depth of only 2 ft. below the surface. <1>
