Private excavations on a plot of land in St Helen's lane. The work was undertaken by a Mr. L.H. Gant and a Mr. W.E. Tucker with the permission of the then owner, Mr. J. Bartlett. The work was carried out in the last few months of 1955. Investigations ceased when the Borough Corporation purchased the site for a building and permission to continue appears to have been refused by the Borough engineer. A letter dated 14/5/1957 refers to the foundations of a Roman building and other deposits on the north side of St Helen's Lane.<1><2>
