Description

In 1937 a trench was cut southwards from the face of the town wall at a point 45 ft. east of Bastion 5. The investigation was directed by R. Hull with the aim of obtaining information on the town ditch. Unfortunately the earlier excavation of a gravel pit appeared to have removed all traces of the ditch. 'Dark earth' was encountered but with no dating evidence.<1>
