Description
Explorations were made by P.G. Laver in the garden of No.18 North Hill. The previously discovered central pavement (ELM669) was uncovered and trenches carried eastwards from it. Unfortunately Laver did not publish the results, and the only material left besides the small finds in the Museum, comprises two descriptions in draft form, some photographs and a plan by Captain H.E.Laver. The central pavement (ELM669) (Hull's pavement A) was removed to the Museum. A plan was made by Captain H.E. Laver (missing?).<1> The continuation of walls and floors southwards under no.17 was also explored to some extent but there is no detailed record.<2> A handwritten note in the paper SMR details pottery finds from this site, giving section drawings and form types. Other find types are also detailed. The collection included a flint flake and possible Saxon pottery.<3> Apparently beneath the central mosaic was an earlier floor of red concrete, itself lying on fine yellow sand which contained fragments of 'Gallo-Belgic pottery'. Walls and floors were recorded without detail except one piece of walling that was exceptionally large for private building in Colchester. It stood 3ft high with three courses of tiles at the bottom, followed by two of rough septaria and two of tile alternately. It was 7ft 4" long, broken at both ends, and with a large piece of the original plaster in position. It stood on a red plaster floor 4" thick. <4>
