Description
Phase 2 mitigation excavation at Brierley Paddocks was effectively divided into two sub-phases, to facilitate the developer's timescales, phase 2.1 comprising 1.1 ha in the south west of the development site, and phase 2.2, of similar size, to the south east.
Multi-period remains of relatively high density were revealed. The earliest occupation phase was an Iron Age roundhouse settlement of at least 9 dwellings found in the south western area. Roman features were in the majority, however, most being part of a complex system of broadly rectilinear enclosures, probably agricultural in nature. Finds, notably pottery and ceramic building material, were particularly concentrated to the south, and it is possible that a high status Roman building existed just outside the southern boundary.
Several large pits were present, interpreted as probable watering holes, two containing waterlogged wood. One, of particular significance contained the in situ worked wood of some kind of structure. Also present was a small inhumation cemetery, to the north of 2.1, with no surviving bone, but in situ coffin nails and staining.
