Abstract/Summary
Reclaim Heritage was commissioned by City & Country Mersea Ltd to produce a post-excavation
assessment report on the results from excavations at Brierley Paddocks, West Mersea Phase 2.2.
Fieldwork was undertaken by CA Heritage between January and April 2022, with finds and
environmental assessment completed by archaeology.biz.
Excavation revealed settlement activity on the site from at least the Iron Age through to the 4th
century CE during the Roman period. Prehistoric remains were limited to small fragments of heavily
truncated ditches that had evidently been disturbed during more thorough Roman activity and
through residual lithic and pottery findspots within later features.
The Roman period is reported on here in two phases: early to mid-Roman (1st and 2nd century CE)
and mid- to late Roman (3rd and 4th century CE). The early to mid-Roman period was characterised
by rectilinear ditches to the north and the mid- to late Roman period by the construction of large
enclosures to the south and east. The site was used extensively during these phases of activity and
5,864 sherds of Roman pottery (weighing over 50kg) were recovered from the site, with greater
concentrations found to the south. The site layout and finds distributions from Phases 2.1 and 2.2
suggest land was used primarily for agriculture with the potential for a high-status settlement just
beyond the edge of excavation to the south.
A range of different activities were represented by the material recovered during excavation. With
the exception of residual flintwork, the earliest potential finds are the ceramic loomweight
fragments and the possible saddle quern fragments. These finds may reflect pre-Roman settlement
close to the site and suggest that textile production was taking place. Although later finds do not
include evidence for continued textile production into the Roman period, there is a significant
increase in the number of imported and locally sourced quern fragments found. Other activities
evidenced by the finds assemblage include saltmaking, smithing, weaving, thatching and harvesting
shellfish. One large pit was investigated and found to contain a partially intact waterlogged wooden
structure in its base. This feature comprised elements of wattle and plank construction that
appeared to line part of one side of the base of the pit, but its precise function remains unknown.
Recommendations have been made at the end of this report for further analysis and publication, but
these will be explored in more detail within a separate Updated Project Design document for the
whole site.
