Description

Magnitude Surveys Ltd undertook a geophysical survey on a c.2.2ha area of open space to the north-east of Colchester’s town wall. A small section of the southern-most area (c.0.05ha) was unsurveyable due to trees that were grouped too densely to survey. The geophysical survey comprised a hand-carried, GNSS-positioned fluxgate gradiometer survey.<1> In terms of the results, the historic and modern land use of the survey area contributed to a generally strong and variable magnetic background, which may limit the disentanglement of weaker or smaller anomalies from the areas of disturbance. Still, possible archaeology has been identified in the form of negative anomalies possibly associated with the earthen ramparts that underlie the survey area. Further possible archaeological anomalies have a complex relationship with an area of magnetic disturbance associated with a former pond that is recorded on historic OS maps.
