Full Description

Course of Roman rampart. Toward the E end of the N wall are the remains of an earthern rampart c.20ft wide. <1> From TL 99892559 to TM 00012561 the ramparts have been mutilated by modern constructions. TM 00012561 - TM00122512 slopes clearly visible. TM 00122512 to TM 00192558 the slopes are faintly visible, the area covered by fruit trees and undergrowth. TM 00192559 to TM 00202541 the slopes are between 0.2 and 1m high. Approximately 15m east of the town wall and W of the main rampart is another bank 0.3m high slightly visible. <2> The inferred rampart was apparently added to the town wall here (65-80AD) at the most 100 years later to improve its defensive qualities. <3>
