Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out at 23 Castle Road in advance of the erection of a conservatory to the rear of the property (CBC planning application 162475). A Roman dump layer was identified 0.8m below current ground level, possibly associated with the remains of a Roman building found during previous investigations at 24 Castle Road. A small quantity of Roman pottery was recovered from layer L2, broadly early 2nd- to 3rd-century in date with one sherd dating to at least the late 2nd-century.<1>
