Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust in November 2018 during the groundworks for a new extension (foundation trenches totalling 26.7m long x 0.6m wide x 1.0-1.5m deep). A concrete service run cut across the trenching. The foundation trenching occurred through four layers - topsoil (L1, c.0.17-0.43m thick) sealed natural (L2, yellow clay, encountered at a depth of c.0.17-0.52m below current ground level). L1 sealed build-up/levelling layers to the northwest (L3, c.0.20m thick) southeast (L4, c.0.20m thick). A pit (F1) of 19th- or early 20th-century date was observed in section, measuring 1.4m wide x 0.34m deep. Pit F1 contained a sherd of post-medieval red earthenware (Fabric 40) and modern English stoneware (Fabric F45M) (CAR 7, 192-193, 254). A small piece of post-Roman peg-tile came from L4 (2).<1>
