Description

An archaeological excavation took place of the foundation trench for an extension to the drama block at St Helena’s School in June 2006. The foundation trench for the extension was excavated using a mechanical excavator with a flat ditching bucket to remove the topsoil. This was carried out under archaeological supervision. From this level, archaeological excavation proceeded by hand. The investigation revealed pits, ditches and a gully all dating from c.AD 5-60, sealed by between 600mm and 750mm of topsoil. The type of pottery and the presence of animal bone, slag, daub and Roman tile suggest domestic and industrial use similar to that identified as a result of the previous investigations at Sheepen. <1> The work followed the excavation of three evaluation test pits in November 2005.<2>
