Description

An excavation took place in 1949-50 on the premises of the Essex County Standard on Culver Street, somewhere in the block now made up of 12 Culver Street and 24 High Street. The observations were made during the excavations for a new press room and large quantities of Roman pottery, Medieval-post Medieval Pottery, glassware and animal bones were recovered. An 18th century timber framed stable was demolished to make way for the extension. The ground below the stable was disturbed and Roman deposits overlay Medieval ones. The foundations of a late 15th century building of brick lay below the finds at a depth of 14ft from present ground level. For a description of the finds please refer to the report.<1>
