Description
A trenched evaluation was carried out in October 1998 to investigate the archaeological implications of redevelopment on the site of St Peter's House, St Peter's Street, Colchester. Four 15m long trenches were excavated by machine. Conditions for observation and recording were good, although some parts of the trenches had to be abandoned due to water logging. The evaluation revealed features of the post-medieval and Roman period on the development site. All site levels below about 1.0m were generally wet and between this level and 1.5m became water-logged. Post-medieval features occurred over the whole of the site area and included pits, a ditch, a set of timber piles and a timber water-main. The timber piles were driven into the silts of a probable old river channel. Roman remains included a gravel bank or road which separated riverine deposits to the north from Roman make-up on the south side of the site. No clear signs of structures were seen on the areas of Roman make-up although several large fragments of stone were recovered including one piece which had been worked on two faces and may have come from an important building in the area. <1><2>
