Description

In 1896 No 3 Lexden Road was enlarged and in excavating the basement nine burials of the Roman period were found, of which two were cremations. There were some very fine red ware bottles, about seven inches high, accompanying the burials. Strips of lead forming the part of the bottom of a coffin of wood were also found at a depth of five feet under the tennis lawn at the rear of the house.<1><2>
