Full Description
A Roman cremation at No 3 Lexden Road. One of nine burials found.
In 1896, 3 Lexden Road was enlarged and in excavating the basement nine burials of the Roman period were found, of which two were cremations. There were some very fine red ware bottles, about seven inches high, accompanying the bottles. Strips of lead forming the part of the bottom of a coffin of wood were also found at a depth of five feet under the tennis lawn at the rear of the house.<1><2>
