Description

A watching brief was held during the excavation of foundation trenches for an extension to the Nat West bank building, No's 12-13 High Street. A large medieval well was located on the west side of the site and two phases of a north-south Roman street was clearly visible. There appeared to be a drain running east-west across both the upper and lower street phases. To the west of the road there was a mortared septaria and tile wall foundation. On its inside was a mortar floor. Most of the centre of the site was occupied by a large complex of cellars.<1>
