Description

A watching brief was held during the digging of construction trenches for a new commercial building. The trenches cut through a complex sequence of Roman floors with little additional structural evidence other than a timber wall slot and hearth which lay at a depth of 95cm from the surface. At the west end of the site, the earliest floor showed clear evidence of heavy burning with deposits of burnt daub overlying it up to 15cm thick. Above this was traces of later floors. The whole area showed extensive disturbance by root and worm activity at the interface between the archaeology and the dark earth sandy loams and there appears to have been much disturbance of the Roman levels by later activity.<1>
