Description

In 1909 alterations to the terracing on the west side of the Grammar School resulted in several finds, chief of which was a large female head, veiled and diademed in sandstone. It was on a square base and is clearly from a tomb. It was found 'where the balustrade connects with the wall on the west'.<1> Part of an inscription was also found, made from a thinnish slab of Purbeck marble dedicated to a Roman soldier.<2>
