Description

An excavation within the garden of St Mary's Cottage, Church Walk, was undertaken in 1963 by the Colchester Excavation Committee under the assistant curator of the museum, P.B. Blake. One of the early Roman buildings found to the west in 1962 (See ECC670) was followed for over 20 feet and traces remained of the later Roman house (MON759) which lies mainly beneath the churchyard to the north. Two areas were trenched and features uncovered included the north-west angle of a Roman building previously recorded by Laver (see ECC294). Disarticulated human bones were also recovered together with other evidence for a Roman building on the site including traces of a cement floor, mortar, plaster and flue tiles. <1><2>
