Full Description
During excavations in the south-west corner of the town (ECC670) the robbed-out remains of a Roman masonry building were examined. The building partially overlay a number of earlier buildings which had been destroyed during the Boudican revolt. The building was situated to the north of the excavation area below what is now the churchyard of St. Mary-at-the-Walls. Only part of the southern wall of the building and 2-3ft. of its western return were within the excavation area.
The walls were constructed of alternate courses of cobbles and mortar in the footings and foundation stages with mortar and broken tegulae as superstructure. At one point the wall was preserved to a height of 3ft.
At some time during its life the building was extended to the south. The south-west corner of the building had been broken down in order to bond in a new north-south wall which ran approximately 105ft. to the south and then returned eastwards. This was probably a courtyard or property boundary wall. Only the wall footings survived. These were 2-3ft. wide and 1ft. deep and constructed of alternate courses of mortar and septaria.
Within the angle of this wall and the main building an 'L'-shaped wall had been added, which was designed to extend the house to the south. At this point the original south wall was reduced and a mosaic floor was laid over its footings. Work undertaken in 1963 (ECC1453) on an adjacent property 'proved that this reduction of the south wall pertained only along the length covered by the annex.'<1><2>
