Description

In October 1966 a telephone cable trench was dug down the west side of West Stockwell Street. This cut across 3 east-west masonry footings. They were 2ft thick and dug into natural sand. The first was (missing) north of the High Street, the second (missing), and the third (missing). This last seemed to have a north south wall joining it on its northern side, but it had been robbed out and it is possible it was merely a pit. These foundations are all presumably Roman but it should be remembered that this is in the area of the possibly Norman, stone houses.<1>
