Full Description
In October 1966 a telephone cable trench was dug down the west side of West Stockwell Street. The trench cut across three E to W masonry footings (MCC808-MCC810). They were 2 ft thick and dug into natural sand. The third was (missing) north of the High Street. This last seemed to have a N to S wall joining it on its northern side, but it had been robbed out and it is possible it was merely a pit. These foundations are all presumably Roman but it should be remembered that this is in the area of the possibly Norman, stone houses.<1>
